SVG TROUBLESHOOTING 101: How to open files displaying as web icons

A common question when dealing with SVGs is why the SVG files are not showing up after being downloaded/extracted from a zip file:

Chrome icon is displayed rather than the cutting machine program

This is very common issue with the Microsoft Windows operating system.
It happens because SVG files are in fact web files; your PC is simply identifying them as such which is why they are displaying with your default web browser icon (e.g. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge etc.) rather than with Inkscape, Silhouette etc.
The good news is that no features are lost even when it displays with a web browser icon; here’s how to get it to display correctly:

  • Go to where your SVG file is saved
  • Right-click on the SVG, and select ‘Open With’ → ‘Choose another app’
  • A window then opens so you can choose the default program to open SVGs (in my case it’s Inkscape, but it may be Silhouette Studio or another cutting program)
  • Check the box that says ‘Always use this app to open .svg files’
  • Click ‘Ok’:
  • As you can see, the icon has now changed from the Chrome icon to the Inkscape icon so when you open any future SVGs, they will open up in Inkscape rather in a web browser:

That’s it … Problem solved!
