START DESIGNING WITH INKSCAPE

The great thing about Inkscape is that can be using without any prior graphic design experience/background. I can testify that I had no graphic design knowledge before installing the program, and after some trial and error, am now competent in using the program.

Downloading Inkscape

The program can be downloaded from the official Inkscape website https://inkscape.org; I explain how to do so in the previous post.

Opening Inkscape for the first time

Once it has been installed to your PC, simply open up to display your canvas:

  • Menu bar: Found along the top of the Inkscape window and provides general menu options such as File ‣ Save, Edit ‣ Copy, etc.). There are also Inkscape-specific items.
  • Tool controls bar: Found immediately below the Menu bar adjusts to whichever tool that you have currently selected, and displays that tool’s options.
  • Toolbox: Found vertically along the left-hand side of the Inkscape window, and contains the main drawing tools i.e. Shapes selections, Bézier tool, Text etc. Only one tool can be selected at a time.
  • Canvas: The large blank area is where the image is edited.
  • Page Area: A black outline represents the visible page area.
  • Commands bar: Found vertically along the right-hand side of the Inkscape window, and gives quick access to common commands, which are also available via the drop-down menus along the top of the Inkscape window.
  • Snap controls button: To access the Snap Controls button, look for the magnet icon in the toolbar at the top of the Inkscape window. When you click on the Snap Controls button, a menu will appear with options for configuring the snapping behavior of your shapes and objects.
  • Rulers: Found at the top and on the left of the canvas to help with grid and guideline placement.
  • Colour palette: Found at the bottom of the Inkscape window, and is mostly used to change the fill/stroke color of an object.
  • Status bar: Found at the bottom of the Inkscape window, and provides information such as the colours of the selected object, layers, cursor coordinates, zoom level and page rotation; it displays information about the current document and the actions you are performing.
  • Docking area: The docking area is a space around the edges of the main window where you can dock various panels and dialogs. The docking area is divided into four areas: the top, bottom, left, and right edges of the main window.

That’s a basic rundown of the Inkscape user interface; as mentioned it looks a little intimidating when you first open the program, but you’ll get to grips with it before you know it!
